Fitting a metal driveway gate purchased from Gates and Fences UK.
Tools:
- Pencil
- Tape Measure
- Spirit Level
- Hammer Drill
- Hammer
- Spanner
- Screwdriver
Set up. Although metal gates can be mounted on the rear of the post, over 90% are set up as below image.
If you buy metal posts with your gate, the hinge lugs will already be attached or if not, you will receive the hinge plates and eye bolts.
We will assume you already have gate posts/ pillars in place. If you don’t… see our “Fitting Gate and Fence Posts” guide.
- First, decide what clearance you need from ground level to bottom edge of metal gate. To allow stones, leafs etc to pass underneath, we recommend this to be 50mm (2″). However, if your drive slopes up, increase as needed.
- Attach the silver threaded eye bolt to the gate. There will be 2x pre drilled holes on each gate leaf – top and bottom on side.
- If posts (with pre welded lugs) have been fitted, simply hang the gate in position and adjust top and bottom to correct gap size and level. Repeat for next side.
- If you are placing hinge plates on to the posts, mark the position and fix to posts.
All opening latch etc will be pre fitted to the metal gate.
